If the state rewrites a person's mind, is the person who returns to society still the person who committed the crime?
And there is another problem.
No. 8049 may not remember the truth about his crime.
If memory can be altered, personality corrected, and identity reconstructed—
who, exactly, is being punished?
No. 8049: The State That Will Not Kill is a near-future thought experiment about punishment, rehabilitation, identity, and the limits of state power.
It does not ask you to find the right answer.
It asks what remains when every answer has a cost.
